500 Canefield residents benefit from roadworks

several Region Six roads, bridges to be repaired soon

Some 500 residents of Canefield, East Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six) will soon breathe a sigh of relief as a result of the more than $2 million in road repairs being done on their access road.

The work is expected to be completed by mid-December.

Speaking with DPI, Regional Chairman Mr. David Armogan said the initiative fulfils a commitment made to residents during a visit, where they highlighted the deplorable state of Welfare Street.

He added that while the Regional Administration had hoped to repair several roads their budget was not enough to do all. The works on the access road was facilitated through ongoing works on the Canje main road, which leads into the community.

“We notice that there is a need for rehabilitation works to be done on the roads particularly these two since they lead into the housing scheme on the GuySuCo land and so we are making sure to correct this issue because there are motorists among others who have complained that their vehicles are getting damaged due to the condition of the road,” Mr. Armogan explained.

The Regional Chairman said the Administration has spent all of the monies allocated for this programme with some works to start soon.

The regional body has commenced repairs on several bridges at Black Bush Polder, Bloomfield, Chesney and others. Several new bridges are also to be constructed in the coming weeks.

These include a heavy-duty bridge at Block 4 Tain, Corentyne, while light-duty bridges will be constructed at Clifton, Bullah Dam, Betsy Ground and Crabwood Creek. A new foot bridge will also be built at Number 70/71, Corentyne.
