Citizens welcome handwashing station installed at Stabroek Square.

It has been just a few days since the Rotary Club of Georgetown Central in collaboration with the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), installed a public handwashing station at the Stabroek Square. Their way of contributing towards the fight against the Novel Coronavirus (COVID 19).
Earlier on Wednesday, the Department of Public Information, DPI, visited downtown Stabroek and sure enough, citizens who were out and about expressed appreciation for the initiative.
Nearby vendors related that the handwashing station proved to be very convenient to them as well as shoppers and bus and taxi drivers who traverse the area daily, and who all dread contracting COVID 19.
Floyd Alleyne from Uitvlugt, West Bank Demerara, who operates a walk and sell vending service at Stabroek applauded the initiative.
“Very good service, I walk and sell so now I finish, I wash and clean up before I get something to eat,” Alleyne stated.
Another gentleman, who goes by a most fitting call name “Cleaner”, has taken it upon himself to ensure the sinks that were set up this weekend were kept clean.
“They set it up, so I clean it to ensure people could continue using it. It’s a very good thing they do here,” he noted.
During this pandemic, here is a cheap and easy way to prevent the spread of the virus; wash your hands frequently with soap and water. But remember a quick scrub and a rinse is not enough.
Here is how it should be done:

- Wet hands with running water
- Apply enough soap to cover wet hands
- Scrub all surfaces including back of hands, between fingers and under nails – for at least 20 seconds to ensure full coverage.
- Rinse thoroughly with running water
- Dry hands with a clean cloth or single-use towel.
