Fire destroys Diamond Secondary School Administrative Building

Ministry of Education, Press Release – Tuesday, December 24, 2018

At 1:20 am this morning the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) responded to a report of a fire at Diamond Secondary School on the East Bank of Demerara. Upon arrival, the administrative building which housed the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher Teachers offices along with the Computer Laboratory and the Library was completely engulfed.

The GFS responded promptly and was able to contain the blaze to that building which is now completely destroyed. The cause of the fire is not known at this time. Inspections were conducted by the GFS to ascertain whether there was a power surge affecting that area at the time of the blaze and it was found that there was no issue with the electricity supply.

It should be noted that no other building was affected or damaged by the fire and therefore school will reopen as scheduled. The Ministry of Education (MoE) is currently engaging the school’s administration and other Regional Officials to ensure plans are in place to cater for the smooth operations of the school when it reopens.

The Ministry of Education has no additional information at this time and when the GFS completes its investigations, the findings will be made known.
