An orientation exercise for the first batch of Guyanese perusing the PetroEd Oil and Gas e-learning training has been held at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Ministry of Education, the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), and PetroEd.

Director of CTVET, Floyd Scott disclosed that they engaged PetroEd September last during a fact-finding mission relating to its open Programme Education Network.

The discussion addressed PetroEd’s ability to extend its reach into the remote areas since CTVET’s focus is to facilitate development possibilities, occupational and skill access to every region in Guyana.

Scott told the sizeable audience that the training would be conducted in two parts. The first is the basic principles of petroleum, followed by the introductory courses for the drilling industry.

“The thrust of this programme is to raise awareness of the oil and gas industry and the behaviour and cultural change which is required in the oil and gas sector, especially as it relates to safety, health and workplace behaviour,” he added.

Describing the gathering as “forward-thinking Guyanese,” education minister, the Hon. Dr. Nicolette Henry said their presence clearly showed that were looking to boost their capacity to contribute to “this beautiful and resilient country in this decade of development.”

“Technology is changing the world around us, and so it will impact the education sector, and there is a big cultural change that is attached to that. I believe by seizing the initiative we can make sure that this works well for our educators, our administrators in education and of course our children.”

DPI spoke to some of the successful applicants. “As a Guyanese, this means a lot to me. And I am so proud of the government for providing this opportunity for not only the young but persons of all ages. This is just a stepping stone for greater things our country has to offer,” Fiona Assanah related.

Another applicant, Ganesh Singh, said as a person with a disability, the opportunity was a blessing. “This will help us to acquire the foundation skills for any future academic development in this field,” Singh said.

The course will begin immediately after the applicants receive their profile log-in details. Each applicant would have to acquire a 70 per cent pass to elevate to a higher lesson, and when completed, a certificate of completion will be available in the student’s SkillGRID profile.

All courses are online through PetroEd’s educational portal. PetroEd is s an eLearning (online) provider for the oil and natural gas industry offering comprehensive oil and gas training around the world.
