Scores of families, including Venezuelan migrants, are on the receiving end of the government’s goodwill as essential items were today provided to persons living in Golden Grove, East Bank of Demerara (EBD).

The residents, who live along the bank of the Demerara River, were provided with food and non-food items by the Civil Defence Commission (CDC).

Partnering with the Ministries of Education, Social Protection and Public Health, the government is working on immunisation and education as well as welfare support of the migrants.

Speaking to Info Hub, Minister of Citizenship, Hon. Winston Felix explained that the government has continued to lend support to migrants.

“We’ve been embracing the Venezuelans migrants however they come as a result of the policy not to return them we have been landing them wherever we find them and giving them and a three-month stay,” Minister Felix said.

The minister also stressed that registration and relocation are on the forefront of the government’s slate.

“The ministerial committee has a relationship with the international organisations with respect to the support of Venezuelans; whether it’s in health, whether it’s in children’s welfare, whether it is trafficking in persons; we have that representation on the committee to address the issues and to make reports and bring us up to date with the current situation,” the minister added.

Over 600 persons have made the riverbank their home – along the Grove to Herstelling stretch. Of this number, over 150 of them are Venezuelan migrants.
