DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, March 20, 2019

Residents of Essequibo Islands-West Demerara will soon have access to a new Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GL&SC) sub-office costing $37M.

During a sod-turning ceremony at Crane on the West Coast Demerara, Minister of State, Joseph Harmon highlighted that the construction of this new building is part of government’s programme of taking its services to the people.

“As you know this building that will be constructed here is part of government’s programme of taking service to the people, it is part of our programme of decentralising the government’s services and ensuring that it is close as possible to where the people are.”

According to the minister, there are more services that the commission can provide to landowners that are not being fully utilised. However, he called on the residents to utilise the services once made available.

As the commission work to improve its quality of service to Guyanese, just recently it opened a new office in New Amsterdam, Region 6. This facility brings the township closer to having all government services being delivered to its residents.

Paulette Henry, Chairperson of the Board of Directors at GL&SC, said there are 8 employees at the Region 3 office, and with the new facility that is expected before the end of 2019, more persons will be employed to serve the area.

The government, in 2015, pledged to improve people’s access to services by taking the services to them. The aim was to end the travelling of residents from these far-flung areas to access these public services.
