50th Republic Anniversary launched

DPI, Guyana, Sunday, October 27, 2019

As 2019 draws to a close and the new year swiftly approaches, bringing with it Guyana’s 50th Republic Anniversary, the Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sport launched the Jubilee Anniversary celebrations in Linden on Saturday, October 26.

Launched at the Linden-Georgetown Municipal Bus Park, under the theme ‘Guyana Together – Reflect, Celebrate, Transform’ residents came out in numbers to participate in the activity. The event kicked off with a costume parade accompanied by steel orchestra and drum corps.

Later at the launch ceremony, Minister of Social Cohesion, Hon. Dr. George Norton explained the significance of the theme.

“Guyana Together speaks to the importance of all Guyanese uniting as one people, in pursuit of a prosperous destiny for this great nation. Reflect emphasises the need for us to reminisce from whence we came, and acknowledge the struggles and sacrifices our ancestors made for us to get here. Celebrate refers to our innate ‘Guyaneseness’ to mark every milestone. Transform signifies the need for us to take Guyana to the next level. It speaks to the future, the decade of development and our country’s move to becoming a Green State.”

The minister also noted that education must form part of the celebration.

“It is imperative that we educate ourselves on what it means to be a Republic and the role that we play in honouring and continuing the legacies set by those before us… We must educate and equip ourselves to lead not just Guyana but the world because we have what it takes,” he emphasised.

In concluding Minister Norton observed that, “Guyana truly has come a far way, as a Republic and I hope that 50 years from now this nation will be a thriving force, a rich, sustainable paradise of leading visionaries, innovative solutions and cultural and architectural magnificence.”

In her remarks, Mayor of Linden, Her Worship Waneka Arrindell said, “we will celebrate 50 years of Mashramani and 50 years as a town. This spectacular event displayed today [Saturday] must, therefore, be continued as a reflection of the strength and resilience of our people”.

The official logo for the jubilee celebration, which was designed by Robert Hoban and Catherine Martin, was also unveiled.
