As the debate on the PPP-piloted no-confidence motion heats up in the National Assembly, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams, SC., the second speaker on the Government’s side, questioned the opposition on how the loss of votes translates to winning support.

The Attorney General (AG) said the PPP’s votes at the November 12 Local Government Elections (LGE) fell by 10 per cent. As the APNU LGE representative, he also dispelled the opposition claim that they won the community of Buxton.

Further defending the Coalition Government’s three-year track record, the AG reminded of the era of the “Phantom Squad” which committed hundreds of extra-judicial killings of young men.

The National Assembly was reminded of the many innocent lives which were lost due to sensless killings by the “black clothes” police ranks under the Jagdeo-led PPP government.

He referenced the “dark page” where youths suffered in the prison system as a result of trumped-up charges. Under the PPP regime “they didn’t care for young people in this country,” the AG told the National Assembly.

The judiciary, the AG said, was in shambles under the previous administration with lack of independence, which is now restored under the Coalition Government.

He expressed confidence that under the leadership of President David Granger, the country will continue to move forward and outrightly rejected the motion.
