Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) May/June 2020 Report on Results

MAY/JUNE 2020 CARIBBEAN ADVANCED PROFICIENCY EXAMINATION (CAPE) REPORT ON RESULTS

BACKGROUND

In May/June 2020, eight hundred fifty three (853) candidates from ten (10) Secondary Schools and five (5) Private centres wrote the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination in Guyana.

The fifteen Examination Centres were:

Region 10:              Mackenzie High School, Christianburg/Wismar Secondary

Region 6:                Berbice High, New Amsterdam Secondary, Guyana Private (090132)

Region 4:                 President’s College

Region 3:                 Saraswati Vidya Niketan

Georgetown:           The Bishops’ High, Queen’s College, St Joseph’s High, St Rose’s High, St Stanislaus College, Marian Academy, Adult Education Association and Chase’s Academy.

A summary of entries over the past two (2) years is indicated below:

While there was a slight decrease in the number of Candidate Entries, the number Subject Entries increased in 2020 from 2019. There was also a marginal increase in the Pass Rate for 2020.

Candidates offered Units in thirty five (35) subject areas. Each Unit comprises of three Modules (equivalent to 150 credit hours), and is separately examined and certified.

Candidates from Guyana offered sixty five (65) units at this year’s examination.

The Single Unit Subjects offered this year were:

Caribbean Studies, Communication Studies and Integrated Mathematics.

The Double Unit Subjects offered were:

Accounting, Agricultural Science, Applied Mathematics,  Biology, Building & Mechanical Engineering Drawing (Building), Chemistry, Computer Science, Digital Media, Economics,  Electrical & Electronic Technology, Entrepreneurship, Environmental Science, Food & Nutrition,  Geography, History, Information Technology, Law, Literatures in English,  Logistics & Supply Chain Management, Management of Business, Physical Education & Sports, Physics, Pure Mathematics, Sociology, Spanish,  Tourism, Performing Arts and Green Engineering,

The results for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination are reported on a seven-point scale – Grades 1 – VII. Candidates attaining Grades 1 – V have attained an acceptable standard for matriculation purposes, with Grade One representing an excellent performance, while Grade Two and Three represent very good and good standards of performance respectively.

Overall Pass Rate   93   93.16

The overall pass rate in 2020 is 93.16%.  An increase was noted in the number of candidates securing Grades I and II, passes.

The gender distribution of the overall pass rate is 36 % males and 64 % females.

In the following thirty three (33) Units, candidates obtained a 100% pass rate (with Grades one to five passes): Accounting Unit 1, Agricultural Science Unit 2; Applied Mathematics Unit 2; Environmental Science Unit 1 & 2; French Unit 1; Food & Nutrition Unit 2; Geography Unit 1 & 2; Information Technology Unit 1 & 2; Animation & Gaming Design Unit 1 & 2; Literatures in English Unit 2; Physics Unit 2; Physical Education & Sport Unit 1 & 2; Performing Arts Unit 1 & 2 (Cinematic Arts & Drama); Spanish Unit 2; Digital Media Unit 1 & 2; Green Engineering Unit 1 & 2; Building & Mechanical Engineering Drawing Unit 1 (Building) & 2 (Mech), Electrical & Electronic Eng. Tech Unit 1 & 2; Entrepreneurship Unit 2; Logistical & Supply Chain Operations Unit 2; Financial Services Studies Unit 1; and Tourism Unit 2.

Further , in the following thirty (30) Units the pass rate of candidates was 75% or higher with Grades One to Five passes: Accounting Unit 2; Agricultural Science Unit 1; Applied Mathematics Unit 1; Biology Unit 1 & 2; Caribbean Studies Unit 1; Chemistry Unit 1 & 2; Communication Studies Unit 1; Computer Science Unit 1 & 2; Economics Unit 1 & 2; Food & Nutrition Unit 1; History Unit 1 & 2; Integrated Mathematics Unit 1; Law Unit 1 & 2; Literatures in English Unit 1; Management of Business Unit 1 & 2; Physics Unit 1; Pure Mathematics Unit

2; Sociology Unit 1 & 2; Spanish Unit 1; Entrepreneurship Unit 1; Tourism Unit 1; and Logistics & Supply Chain Operations Unit 1.

A slight decline was recorded in Integrated Mathematics from 83.85% in 2019 to 82.14% in 2020. Pure Mathematics Unit 1 recorded a pass rate of 54.96% in 2020.

Caribbean Studies and Communication Studies continue to record an over 95% pass rate. Digital Media and Animation & Gaming Design were written electronically and continues to record 100% pass rate.

Comparison of Entries and Pass Rate 2019-2020 By Government Schools

In 2020 entries were received from ten (10) school centres. Increases and decreases in both the number of candidates and subject entries were recorded.

 Five (5) of the ten (10) school centres recorded increases in their overall pass rates; namely Berbice High, Christianburg/Wismar Sec, Mackenzie High, New Amsterdam Secondary and President’s College.

 President’s College moved from 85.19% in 2019 to 94.39% in 2020.

 Christianburg/Wismar had an increase in both candidate and subject entries in 2020 as compared to 2019. An improved overall pass rate was also recorded for this school from 92% in 2019 to 93.55% in 2020.

 St Joseph’s High pass rate remained constant in 2020 at 92.99%.

 The Bishops’ High and Queen’s College recorded a decline in pass rate for 2020. The Bishops’ High moved from 98.44% in 2019 to 94.3% in 2020 and Queen’s College moved from 94.44% in 2019 to 93.13% in 2020.

Ninety seven (97) private candidates offered four hundred thirty eight (438) subject entries at the 2020 sitting. Their overall performance was satisfactory.

Several candidates’ recorded outstanding performance at this year’s (2020) Caribbean

Advanced Proficiency Examination. The top performers include:

The Top Student: Naomi Cambridge of St Rose’s High who secured Grade One passes in nine (9) units and a Grade 2 in one unit.

     Shelock Langevine Jr. of St Stanislaus College secured Grade One passes in eight (8) units and Grade 2 passes in five (5) units.

     Donnelle Pyle, also of St Stanislaus College secured 7 Grade One passes, 1 Grade Two and 2 Grade Threes.

     Zane Ramotar of Queen’s College who secured 7 Grade Ones and 1 Grade Two in eight units written

     Abdul Subhan of St Stanislaus College secured 6 Grade One passes and 2 Grade Two passes in eight units written

There were also very notable and commendable performances from:

  Nicolas Ally, Carl Gilford, Stefan Hamilton and Zharal Hollingsworth of Bishops’ High School

  Brianna Gopie, Reseda Hack and Samuel Haynes of Queen’s College
