GFF President lauds Govt investment in football
DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, February 18, 2020
Football in Guyana has benefitted from phenomenal investments over the last four years under the present administration.
Citing Guyana’s first FIFA Forward all-weather artificial field at Providence, East Bank Demerara, President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Wayne Forde told DPI, “We have been able to acquire the largest amount of real estate for the development of a football facility.”
The facility allows young footballers to train under conditions similar to what they would encounter when participating overseas.
Additionally, in February 2019, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the Government for the 25-year lease of 7.3 acres of land to construct another football facility.
This new Football Complex is expected to accommodate a full sizes pitch of international standard, two mini-pitches and a new headquarters for the GFF. The mini-pitches will be made available footballers in various communities for training on a 24-hour basis.
Forde said, “in the third quarter of this year, we are going to commence construction of the GFF Football Complex at the Durban Park that was recently awarded to the GFF.”
Aside from real estate, Forde noted that the government has also invested in other areas. He mentioned the administration made a significant contribution towards the Golden Jaguars’ inaugural participation in 2018 CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament.
“I want to place on record our gratitude for the continued support that we have been receiving from the Government of Guyana,” the GFF President stated.
