Region Three rising – roads, housing and industries to drive development corridor

A growing number of infrastructure, housing, industrial and trade projects will strengthen Region Three as one of Guyana’s main development corridors.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Guyana–China Friendship Park on Sunday last, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali outlined a series of initiatives aimed at making the region into a hub for growth and investment.

Among the most visible elements of this transformation is an expanding road network, including the ongoing construction of the Del Conte Road. Construction of a four-lane highway from Crane to Parika is about to commence, with associated bridge works already in progress.
“The Delconte Road that was a dream is now actively under construction,” President Ali said.
Plans are also advancing for further expansion towards Wales, alongside the development of the Sandhills Road to improve connectivity across key communities.
At the same time, Region Three is experiencing significant residential expansion. President Ali indicated that 30,000 homes are to be developed in the region, supported by additional private sector-led housing projects expected to come on stream.

Industrial and energy investments are also central to the region’s transformation. The gas-to-shore initiative, including the development of a gas plant, is expected to underpin industrial growth, while plans for a fertiliser plant and expansion of the Wales Industrial Estate point to increased focus on manufacturing and value-added production.
Further strengthening the region’s economic profile are plans for enhanced trade and logistics infrastructure.
A new port at Parika is expected to facilitate the movement of goods to regional and international markets, with additional marine developments anticipated to increase commercial activity on the Demerara River.
“Our food will flow from Parika to the plates of resorts, hospitals and restaurants in the Caribbean,” the president said, adding that private sector interest had also been received for a municipal airport in the region, like the one at Ogle.
Complementing these developments are plans for a regional data centre, waterfront projects, and recreational facilities, including a new national stadium, aimed at improving the quality of life and supporting tourism.
