Hinterland travel costs to drop by 10% with new aircraft for Jags Aviation

Hinterland travel in Guyana is set to become more affordable, with multiple operators committing to fare reductions following a call earlier this year by President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali.

The latest move comes as Jags Aviation expands its fleet with two new aircraft, a development announced by the company’s owner, Brian Tiwarie. He said the investment is part of efforts to meet the president’s request to lower the cost of travel to interior locations.

One of the new Dornier 228 aircraft arrived in Guyana on Saturday, with the second expected on Sunday. The planes will be assembled during the coming week before being deployed to serve hinterland routes.

Each aircraft has a seating capacity of 19 passengers and introduces a first for domestic aviation in Guyana, onboard washroom facilities, which enhance comfort for long-distance travel.

The aircraft were procured from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in India as part of deepening collaboration between the two countries.

Acting High Commissioner of India to Guyana, Manoj Kumar, said the partnership could see Guyana positioned as a hub for Dornier aircraft operations and maintenance in the region.

Meanwhile, other domestic operators have also committed to reducing fares in response to the president’s call earlier this year. Roraima Airways and Trans Guyana Airways have each agreed to a 7 per cent reduction, while Air Services Limited will implement a 9 per cent decrease.

With the addition of the two new aircraft, Jags Aviation’s fleet will increase to 14, building on its continued expansion following the acquisition of two Tecnam P2012 Traveller planes from Italy last year.

The combined efforts of government and private operators are expected to bring tangible relief to hinterland communities, improving access, affordability, and overall connectivity across Guyana.
