Launch of Kaieteur Radio represents open, free media landscape – PM Nagamootoo

― congratulates Kaieteur News on 25th anniversary

DPI, Guyana, Friday, April 5, 2019

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo has congratulated publisher of Kaieteur News, Glen Lall on the 25th anniversary of his newspaper and the launch of Kaieteur Radio.

In a letter to Lall, Prime Minister Nagamootoo, who is performing the duties of President, has stated that the agency “contributed immensely to media freedom in Guyana and has promoted our democratic image by its own bold and fearless journalism”.

He noted that the newspaper has “exposed the pervasive corruption and authoritarianism that led to a change of government in 2015”. He highlighted that the newspaper “survived acts of terror, one of which claimed the lives of five pressmen, economic sabotage in denial of state advertisement, and victimization” because Lall stood up against the “powerful and the mighty.”

He noted that in the past 25 years Guyana has seen a huge advance in the bolstering of an “open, free and plural media landscape.” To this end, he said, Lall’s efforts to attain this objective cannot be undervalued or overlooked.

Prime Minister Nagamootoo expressed his hope that the new radio station will follow the tradition of the newspaper, in promoting programmes that would satisfy the needs of Guyana’s multi-ethnic, multi-cultural society in all areas of broadcasting.
