Ming, Fiedtkou, Allicock, Caesar and Bright walk away with top NSC awards

Athletes who performed exceptionally well both locally and internationally were last evening recognised for their performances at the 2017 National Sports Award.

2018 Commonwealth gold medalist, Triple Jumper Troy Doris his special award from Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. George Norton.

The prestigious event hosted by the National Sports Commission was held at the Savannah Suite, Pegasus.

Calvin Ming, an overseas-based F4 Driver received the Senior Sportsman of the Year Award ahead of sprinter Winston George.

In June 2017 at the world famous Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez Formula 1 Circuit in Mexico City, Ming made history as Guyana’s first F4 champion at the Mexican NACAM FIA Formula 4 championship series.

Marzana Fiedtkou, a prominent hockey player, copped the Senior Sports Woman of the Year 2017 Award. Fiedtkou was the only female Guyanese hockey player to make the Pan American All-Star Indoor hockey team for 2017.

This is aside from her outstanding performances throughout last year. She said that was happy to be recognized for her hard work. “It comes to me as a big surprise. It feels really good to know that my hard work is recognised.”

The Junior Sportsman of the year award was shared by Keevin Allicock who won the Flyweight (52kg) division silver medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games Boxing Championship in 2017 and Campton Caesar who won Guyana’s first CARIFTA Games Under-20 Boys’ 100 metre gold medal.

Allicock an Olympic Gold medalist hopeful, said: “I am feeling joyful because I know a lot of sportsmen were working for this.”

Receiving Junior Sports Woman of the Year award for the second time was the dynamic Chantoba Bright, who is the 2017 CARIFTA Gold medalist long jumper.

Bright said she was in shock at receiving the award for the second time. “I did not expect to win after there was stiff competition between the junior sportswomen last year and it is an honour to have this award being bestowed upon me” she stated.

Minister of Social Cohesion with Responsibility for Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. George Norton congratulated the athletes for their contributions to sports in Guyana.

Minister Norton promised to create a friendly and healthy environment for athletes. “This administration will ensure the existence of a policy framework which protects and facilitates growth and opportunities for athletes, academic institutions, associations, clubs and for all communities,” he said.

He also called upon the athletes to continue to build a vibrant sports culture for Guyana and the Guyanese people.

Commonwealth gold medalist, Triple Jumper Troy Doris also received a special award for his historic performance.
