MoPI clears the air on Reg. 5 sea defence project

—puts to rest misleading Kaieteur News article

DPI, Guyana, Friday, June 26, 2020

The Ministry of Public Infrastructure in a press statement on Friday brought clarity to ongoing sea defence works in Region 5 that has been recently thrown into the spotlight.

The Ministry’s response was prompted by a June 23 article in the Kaieteur News that sought to level allegations of corrupt dealings by not only the Public Infrastructure Ministry but National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) within the Ministry of Finance.

That article held aspersions that NPTAB awarded BK International a contract inflated by $74Million for sea defence works at the foreshore of Content, Mahaicony.

According to MoPI, the newspaper failed to execute its due diligence before publishing the article.

In the statement, MoPI said it, “rejects the notion presented in the article which misrepresents the efforts made to address this urgent national issue, while at the same time endeavouring to undermine the credibility of the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board.”
