President Granger to present Green State Strategy at World Bank

DPI, GUYANA, Thursday, May 17, 2018

President David Granger has been invited to make a presentation on Guyana’s Green State Strategy at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, D.C.

At a high-level State House meeting yesterday, the World Bank’s Country Director for Caribbean Countries and Latin America, Tahseen Sayed said there was much that herself and colleagues at the World Bank can learn from what Guyana is aspiring to achieve.

Sayed noted that with the emerging oil extractive industry, Guyana is in a unique position as it balances this sector with preserving the environment. The World Bank official said, “A presentation on the aspirations of Guyana would be beneficial for both parties.”

The World Bank’s provision of technical and financial support to aid with the ‘Green Agenda’, were also discussed.  The ‘forward-looking’ meeting between the World Bank’s team, Guyana’s Head-of-State and Minister of Finance Winston Felix was deemed as ‘substantive and strategic.’

According to its framework the Green State Development Strategy (GSDS) will guide Guyana’s economic and socio-cultural development over the next 15 years.

Consultations across the ten administrative regions are currently ongoing with various sessions ranging from academic to governmental and civil society stakeholders. Head of the Department of Environment Ndibi Schwiers, earlier this month, said the GSDS is progressing well to its July 2018 deadline.
