Tuseneng call for improved water distribution, communication services

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, March 29, 2018

The residents of Tuseneng, a small Indigenous Village in the North Pakaraima Potaro/Siparuni (Region Eight) is calling for improved water and communication services.

President David Granger and residents of the community.

The village has a population of just over 100 persons and 40 households, and according to Toshao, Philip Geronimo, a potable water supply system is badly needed in the area. He is also requesting that the roads be upgraded since they are vital accessibility and the development of the community.

The concerns were raised, by the Toshao, with President David Granger during his visit to the North Pakaraima for its annual exposition. It was the first time a head of state visited this small developing community. The president was accompanied by Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Sydney Allicock and Minister within the Ministry, Valerie-Garrido-Lowe.

The Toshao said that his community was honoured to host the leader of the country and noted that it is a step in the right direction. Toshao Geronimo is optimistic that the issues will be solved in the not too distant future.

President Granger explained that his visit to Tuseneng is in part to examine the potential of the community which will allow them to ascertain how the administration can increase the economic profits of the community, whilst ensuring there are participation and opportunities for the residents to improve their livelihoods.

The Head of State urged Toshao Geronimo to cooperate with the regional administration in order to determine how they “can get more food to the miners and the market.” This, he said, can be done through agro-processing, “meaning, that everything you grow can be processed and taken to the market.”

“There is hope that this community could be resurrected economically and spiritually,” the president said.

Minister Allicock also spoke of the need for Tuseneng to develop its Village Improvement Plan (VIP), which will allow the people to manage their territory. He encouraged the Village Council to meet with the people and develop sustainable community projects, and the government will be willing to provide technical and financial support.
