Speaking at a Youth Symposium in New York, on Monday evening, Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo highlighted to the Diaspora, the need for Guyanese youth to be adequately prepared to “run things” in the future.

The Prime Minister stated that when the youth take up leadership roles, they must do it with wisdom as their guide, noting that “this is what we want for the future.”

PM Nagamootoo was addressing the Youth Symposium and Launch of the New York Chapter of ‘Move on Guyana Inc.’ The event was held under the theme “Our Youth- Moving Guyana Forward to Modern Development” at God’s Battalion of Prayer Church, Brooklyn, New York.

“We must balance youth with maturity and experience or inject into the youths the qualities of experience and maturity, so when they begin to run things, they are running things with youth as their age and wisdom as their guide; that is what we want for the future,” the Prime Minister stated.

He reiterated the need for our young people to know their history and reflected on his childhood and the fight for Guyana’s Independence, as well as the inspiration which led to him entering politics.

“You are very much Guyanese, wherever you are, you are Guyanese you are distinct and unique, never forget this”, he urged the Diaspora.

The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to update the gathering on the December 21, 2018 vote in the National Assembly.

“We decided, with the commitment of the president, that we respect the rule of law, and we will abide by the decision of the Parliament in such a time that the court interprets the constitution.”

He related that on the night of the vote “I said immediately, we will obey the decision by the National Assembly while we seek out legal opinion on this issue, on the way forward and the consequences on the vote in the national assembly. I said this is how democracy works; it may not give you the results you want, but at the same time, you cannot take the law into your hands… We are going to complete our term and we will be successful in the second term,” the Prime Minister reassured the Diaspora.

Highlighting some of the achievements of the Coalition Government, Prime Minister disclosed that the recent regional outreaches have yielded much success, addressing many of the issues that citizens face.

The Kitty Roundabout, Supernaam Stelling, the Bartica Boardwalk, Independence arches that commemorated the 50th year of Independence, our four-lane roads on the East Coast and East Bank of Demerara were some of the infrastructural improvements he cited.

“So, you have a good thing going in Guyana, and you have to claim credit because you have been part and parcel of this movement for change. We will have to keep our eyes open for Guyana and be vigilant, but for now I believe you are in safe and clean hands,” Prime Minister stressed.

President, Vishal Joseph, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of ‘Move on Guyana’ both delivered remarks at the event, urging all stakeholders to support the movement and Guyana.

Members of the diplomatic corps, including Guyana’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Michael Ten Pow and Consul-General to New York City, Barbara Atherly among others were attendance.
