APNU+AFC await final declaration by Chief Elections Officer
DPI, Guyana, Saturday March 14, 2020
Guyanese are being urged to respect the outcome of the March 2nd Regional and General Elections.
At a media conference, hours after the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), declared the APNU+AFC winner of Region Four; essentially putting the APNU+AFC in the substantial lead, Director General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon made the call.
He said the coalition, like the entire country, now awaits GECOMs declaration.
“This morning, (Saturday), we are at the conclusion of the count of the votes cast for electoral district Number 4, this being the final of 10 declarations to be made, essentially shows that the APNU+AFC has a substantial lead. But we await the final declaration of the Chief Elections Officer,” Harmon stated.
Adding that the process is not yet completed and the coalition trust that the next steps can be completed in a timely manner, so that the country can return to normalcy and the journey to progress that the coalition started would continue.”
“We call upon all Guyanese to respect the declarations of the Elections Commission in these elections and let us move the country forward in peace love and unity,” Harmon urged.
In the meanwhile, he noted that the coalition throughout this entire process has respected both GECOM and the Judiciary and would continue to do so.
“We have always maintained that the management of the electoral process was the sole responsibility of the elections commission and that no one else had any statutory responsibility in that regard. We also recognized the independence and authority of the court and respect its rulings, while some are wanting to seek to intervene and interfere in the work of these two independent bodies, APNU+AFC has always taken a position not to do so,” he noted.
The Director-General says the ANPU+AFC will seek to continue the consultation with communities to foster social cohesion, national unity and community development.
Late Friday night, (GECOM’s) Returning Officer, Clairmont Mingo declared APNU+AFC won 136,057 and the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) 77,231.
At the Regional polls; APNU+AFC 130,289 and the PPP 74,827.
