Ballots cast for LGE by Disciplined Services

DPI, Guyana, Friday, November 2, 2018

Members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Guyana Police Force (GPF), and Guyana Prison Service (GPS) cast their ballots today in the Local Government Elections (LGE).

Ballots were cast at 63 locations across the country. In Georgetown, the Department of Public Information (DPI) visited the polling stations at the Guyana Defence Force Headquarters, Camp Ayangana, Police Headquarters, Eve Leary and the Brickdam Police Station, where voting exercises were ongoing. Voting commenced at 06:00hrs.

At the Police Headquarters, DPI spoke with the Chief Elections Officer (CEO) of the Guyana Elections Commission (CEO), Keith Lowenfield who gave his observations at that time. “I think we started pretty well this morning and the day is continuing at a pace as expected.”

There were some minor hiccups that will easily be ironed out, the CEO said.

Ranks who were unable to vote today will be able to do so on November 12.

GECOM’s Chairman (Ret’d) Justice James Patterson said he is confident of the work done so far by the elections commission, especially in the area of voter education. He too had foreseen a larger turnout by the end of the day.

“We have gone out of the way to use the media. Our staff has been on orders to spread the message. I am confident that we have done our part,” the Chairman emphasised.

A total of 7,918 officers are registered to vote countrywide.
