DPI, GUYANA, Thursday, May 24, 2018

As Guyana gets ready to celebrate its 52nd Independence Anniversary, the Coalition Government has recommitted to placing greater effort on policies and programmes that will see the rapid and sustainable development of Guyana and its people.

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon said the Government also committed to working assiduously both individually and collectively towards the achievement of ‘the good life for all’.

While traditionally the flag raising ceremony is held at midnight of May 26, Minister Harmon said this year’s event, which begins at 14:00 hours on May 25 at the D’Urban Park, will have a special focus on youths, “with emphasis on a strong sense of national pride, patriotism and appreciation for the strides Guyana has made since gaining its Independence.”

Friday’s event will feature a grand cultural display depicting Guyana’s national patrimony. The nation’s development over the past 52 years will be chronicled while highlighting the country’s emergence as a green state.

Over two thousand children drawn from Primary and Secondary schools countrywide, will participate in the cultural display along with a parade comprising youths from various organisations such as School Cadets, the Scouts and Pathfinders.

A flag concert will be hosted on Friday evening at 22:00 hours under the theme “Independence Flag Concert: Celebrate Guyana.” It will feature performances from leading local artistes and at midnight there will be a fireworks display, by the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), to usher in Independence.

Minister Harmon also took the opportunity to extend best wishes to all Guyanese on behalf of President David Granger and his Cabinet on the occasion of our 52nd Independence Anniversary.
