DPI, Guyana, Sunday, July 21, 2019

The second day of the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM’s) House-to-House Registration got underway today in the South Ruimveldt community, with field staff reporting successes in the process.

Officers on the ground were able to complete the registration of a wide cross-section of residents within their cluster (catchment area).

Assistant Registration Officer (ARO)Linden Hinds told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that his cluster of eight teams is responsible for the Lamaha Park and Lamaha Springs communities, along with sections of North Ruimveldt.

Reports from team members today showed a smooth process. Asked about the response, Hinds said there has not been any rejection by residents. In fact, according to the enumerators, residents were all prepared with documents in hand, to commence the process. He attributed that preparation to the public education by the elections body.

Hinds related, however, that all the Scrutineers present during the exercise, represented the A Partnership for National Unity+ Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) only. Scrutineers for the Opposition PPPC were not in attendance.

The field staff continues the registration process from 8:00hrs to 17:00hrs on weekends and holidays and 15:00hrs to 19:00hrs on weekdays.

The process continues until October.

Meanwhile, GECOM announced its vacancies for more temporary field staff. The elections body is seeking to fill the vacancies of Presiding Officers, Assistant Presiding Officers, Poll Clerks, Ballot Clerks/Counting Assistants and Information Clerks.

A release from the commission noted the ideal applicant should have a sound secondary education, highly motivated, committed, able to work in teams with minimum supervision or have at least two (2) years electoral experience.

Applications must clearly state the applicant’s name, address, contact number (s) and qualification and must be signed and submitted no later than Thursday, 01 August 2019 to the Chief Election Officer.
