Mabaruma more developed in 3+ years

─ Min. Cummings highlights coalition successes in Mabaruma town

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, February 27, 2019

“In just under four years you can walk around this community and see with your own two eyes the developmental works taking place in this Region.”

This observation was made by Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings to residents of Mabaruma.

The junior health minister took the opportunity while visiting the town recently, to remind residents of the vast development that has occurred and continues to unfold in the Indigenous community, just after three years, ten months of the APNU+AFC government being in office.

The Minister noted that one of the most laudable interventions by the government in Mabaruma is the new concrete roads from the airport into the town. This has since provided comfortable and efficient transport allowing residents to better access various services.

“While there is the comical idea that is sometimes vocalized by the less perceptive minds that… ‘people ain’t want roads they can’t eat concrete’, I know that because of the reduction of spare parts needed and trips to the mechanic for the many who own vehicles in this region, because of the new roads, they are eating more, because there is more disposable income available!” Minister Cummings explained.

She said the upgrading of the roads is just one of several measures which should have been long implemented in the town. Nevertheless, since 2015, the APNU+AFC government is on a course of massive development and continues to push forward in that regard.

Referring to the current political climate and the opposition’s fight to return to power, Minister Cummings reminded Mabaruma residents of the neglect they endured over the 23-year opposition rule and urged them to not be tricked into returning to the past.

“Do not worry yourself with an opposition that had 23 years to make things right but could not, and is now pleading for another chance at power. Look at Mabaruma today. They had 23 years and could not build a road. In 23 years, you could not have your own radio station. In 23 years, you could not have a market square at Kumaka that is clean and comfortable for business to be conducted. Look at your town hall and its environs. You really want to give a people who had 23 years to make right, another chance to do nothing for you?”

Cummings reiterated her confidence that residents of Mabaruma and Guyana are fully aware of the ongoing development in the country.

“Guyanese are very aware and focused and are determined to have a government that is transparent, responsive, caring, progressive, as is led by leadership that possesses the integrity, modern vision and transformational ideas that will take Guyana to unprecedented prosperity.”

The minister noted that the intent of the government is to move the country forward in a wholistic manner, leaving no town or region behind.

Dr. Cummings made these remarks as she delivered the feature address at Mabaruma’s observance of the 49th Republic Anniversary and flag raising ceremony.
