Rehabilitation of Charity Wharf a priority
DPI, Guyana, Sunday, March 17, 2019
The rehabilitation of the Charity Stelling Wharf is high on the list of priorities for the Ministry of Public Infrastructure.
Minister David Patterson gave this assurance during a visit to the facilities last Friday.
“[The stelling] is a gateway for a lot of persons not only as a marketing quarter but it is for transportation purposes as well,” he said in an invited comment.
Due to the deterioration of the wooden piles supporting the structure, “recommendations will be made that nothing heavy will be placed on it”.
He disclosed that a Terms of Reference (TOR) document has been provided to the region which is expected to be sent out immediately to secure a consultant to conceptualise a design.
“The reason we want a design is because someone has to test each of the piles underneath wharf… we don’t want to make an assumption,” he explained.
A “sound concerted and informed decision” will be made after the design is produced and the ministry will work to ensure that the Charity Wharf is safe and habitable.
A meeting is expected to be held with the regional administration and the Ministry of Communities to ensure that the rehabilitation of the wharf is made a priority.
