TOTALTEC continues to contribute to Guyana’s local content

DPI, Guyana, Friday, August 23, 2019

TOTALTEC Academy continues to contribute to Guyana’s local content in the oil and gas industry. On Friday, 50 young Guyanese graduated from the academy with immediate employment in the industry.

Since opening their doors in 2018, the TOTALTEC Academy has developed programmes which are on par with international standards and have trained over 250 Guyanese. TOTALTEC Chief Executive Officer, Lars Mangal stated that the institution was able to transition former workers from the sugar estates, bauxite and gold mining industries to a career in the petroleum field.

“It has exceeded my expectations what we have been able to do and how much we have had an impact on the industry here by creating opportunities for young Guyanese men and women to leapfrog into operational positions and supervisor positions,” he remarked, noting that there are graduates who are employed by the Guyana Shore Based Incorporated (GSBI) and in the other parts of the industry.

GSBI Human Resource Manager, Shaun Prince, in his remarks, noted that TOTALTEC contributed to the success of GSBI.  He described the academy as “a true partner and contributor to the success of GSBI.”

According to Prince, the academy has answered: “our calls to deliver world-class shore-based services with the most competent Guyana has to offer and they have provided through training over 50 percent of our current operations.”

Many of the graduates entered the academy with various academic backgrounds.

Delivering the charge, Minister of Natural Resources, Hon. Raphael Trotman told to always uphold the safety standards.

“There cannot be one glitch because you know the consequences and I am sure you’ve been told and shown videos of what those consequences are but as you face difficult circumstances, never ever give up,” he encouraged.

Prime Minister, Hon. Moses Nagamootoo, who attended the graduation, congratulated academy for contributing what he deemed as the most tangible manifestation of local content in the oil and gas industry. He also highlighted that the over 250 Guyanese who have been trained in new technologies have been simultaneously deployed to productive paying jobs.

The graduates underwent an 8-week programme consisting of theoretical and practical learning and completed nine courses. These courses covered 64 modules of safety and oil and gas operational training. TOTALTEC also committed to developing closer cooperation with the TVET council and technical institutions across the country to ensure their graduates are well prepared for specialised roles in the oil and gas industry.
