DPI, Guyana, Sunday, August 4, 2019

Youths residing in the community of Rasville, Roxanne Burnham Garden, have indicated their willingness to make positive changes in their lives and for the betterment of their community.

On Sunday, scores of residents came out to participate and witness the annual youth football competition, organised by Ground Consultant Engineering Company.

Public Service Minister, Hon. Tabitha Sarabo-Halley was present among the cheerers showing her support.

“I thought it was a really good initiative. The Ground Consultant Engineering Company who sponsored the event has recognised that this is a community that loves sport and is a way of getting everyone, especially the youths involved in something positive.” Minister Sarabo-Halley told the Department of Public Information (DPI).

One of the event’s organisers, Trenton Barrow, explained that the event is held during the August vacation and is a method of providing constructive physical activities for the youngsters. He said he had realised, some time ago, that football and other sport activities are welcomed by the youths in the community, hence the yearly initiative.

According to Barrow, in keeping with his focus on young people and as part of the community enhancement initiative, a playpark will soon be established to create a friendly environment for the smaller children.

Meanwhile, the action kicked off at around 15:00hrs at the Rasville football tarmac and saw over eight teams with five members each, participating.

At the end of the tournament, the winning team walked away with $50,000; while second and third place teams received $35,000 and $15,000 respectively.

The Government of Guyana, through the Ministries of Education and Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sport, continue to support similar community events and reiterate their commitment towards working non-stop to provide substantial activities in the best interest of the nation’s young minds.
