DPI Guyana, Wednesday, May 1 2019
Forty agreements of sale for lands were handed over to the residents of Coomacka, a small community located up the Demerara River, Region 10. The agreements were part of some 149 titles that are being prepared to be delivered to the residents.
The sale agreements were delivered by Minister of State, Dawn Hastings-Williams, who along Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Sydney Allicock, Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton and Minister of Public Service, Tabitha Sarabo-Halley visited the village on April 30, as part of the government’s regional outreach programme.
According to Minister Hastings-Williams, the agreements deliver on a promise made by former Minister of State and newly appointed Director General, Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon. The residents will be required to sign the agreements, carry them into the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC) and pay the fee for their titles.
“We not only make promises, but we follow up and then we deliver…Now you will have a document in your hands that you can take to the bank or even a loan to do small business.,” Minister Hastings-Williams said.
While warning the residents against squatting, she reminded that “there is land for everybody, and this is just the beginning.”
The State Minister reiterated that that APNU+AFC Coalition Government is committed to bringing its services to the people, regardless of their location, race, religion or political beliefs.
She assured the Coomacka residents, “We don’t believe that only when there are elections that you will then see your president and ministers coming in and asking you to vote for them. We believe in coming and listening to you; interacting with you and discussing the issues you are facing. So, it [outreaches] began since last year and we are continuing this year to bring your ministers and services to you.”
In addition, some $100Million was allocated in the 2019 National Budget for drainage and irrigation and other works to bring relief to the Coomacka residents, especially during the rainy season.
