Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson today commissioned a 5.5-Megawatt Power Plant in Canefield Berbice.

In his remarks, Minister Patterson noted the importance of the project and the time it truly takes to complete such undertakings.

“The decision to install this plant was made since 2015…. We did an examination of our current stock, all the generation sets within the country, and this particular site was identified as one of the areas that needed strengthening”

He further stated “This plant is the first of three plants that will be commissioned this year. In a week’s time we will be commissioning a plant in Anna Regina Essequibo, and then shortly after we will be commissioning a plant in Bartica which is in keeping with our commitment”

Minister Patterson also indicated that Guyana remains firm in its commitment of moving to renewable energy by 2020.

“Guyana as a country through President David Granger has committed that we shall transition to 100 percent renewable as soon as possible, the date the Head of State has given is 2025.”

In order to achieve this, there are several projects that the Ministry will undertake in conjunction with Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL); such as the installation of 30Megawatts of solar energy with storage into the Demerara interconnected grid and the installation of 10 Megawatts of wind energy into the grid.

Also present at the ceremony was Chief Executive Officer of Guyana Power and Light Albert Gordon who spoke of plans to get consumers more involved with power efficiency but in looking to have major producers give to the grid.

“We are looking to assist our customers behind the meter, so we will come in with experts, to look at your premises and see where there are the possibilities to reduce your energy consumption,” Gordon said.
