—Improved attendance and outcomes across the education district

−Reg. 4 honours its top achievers

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, December 10, 2019

Performance and attendance have greatly improved in the Region 4 education district over the last academic year.

Regional Chairperson Genevieve Allen on Tuesday said the successes were partly a result of the 5B’s initiative championed by His excellency President David Granger.

The countrywide initiative provides children with access to buses, boats, bicycles, books and breakfast all free of charge and has transformed access to education leading to improved academic performances.

On Tuesday, the Department of Education, Region 4 celebrated the schools and teachers who contributed to the successes at its Regional Award Ceremony.

Dozens of students received awards for excellent performance in the Grades 2, 4, and 6 assessments as well as at CSEC, CAPE, and the Secondary Competency Certificate Programme.

Outstanding performers at the National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships and the JOF Haynes Debating Competition were also honoured.

There were also infrastructural improvements with the erection of three new nursery schools this year at Craig, Strathspey and Vryheid’s Lust.

According to Regional Education Officer, Tiffany Harvey, “our schools must be given the attention, not only [through] teacher training, but …we must have the environment ready for our teachers and learners to function effectively.”

St. Cuthbert’s Secondary, located in the only Indigenous settlement in Region 4, now has a recently completed science laboratory Harvey disclosed.

Significant repairs were also done at the Diamond, Timehri and Providence Primary Schools, Buxton Secondary and Bladen Hall Multilateral School.

Chief Education Officer Dr. Marcel Hutson, who encouraged the prize winners to continue on their path of success, said the results pointed to a significant improvement in educational outcome.

Covent Garden Primary was adjudged the Most Improved School at the Grade Two assessment while New Diamond/Grove Primary was the best performer excelled at the Grade Four level.
