Ambassador of China commits to continued support to new Government of Guyana

Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, His Excellency Cui Jianchun, today called on Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Honourable Hugh Todd.

Congratulating Minister Todd on his recent appointment, the Chinese Ambassador pointed to the link between foreign and economic policy.

Further, noting the progress achieved since he had been posted to Guyana, Ambassador Jianchun stated that there was more to be done. “I’ve seen that the President and Ministers are working to bring about change, not just for Guyana but for the larger region and I would like to continue to work with you,” he said.

“I believe in the next five to ten years, Guyana has the potential to be a regional leader. It is Guyana’s turn,” the Ambassador stressed. He also committed to re-establishing dialogue on the Belt and Road Initiative. 

In his turn, Minister Todd expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Jianchun for his continued support.

“In the next five years, Guyana can see the first wave of industrial revolution and advancements in energy,” the Foreign Minister stated.

The Minister also stated that China’s relations with Latin America and the Caribbean have been progressing steadily and Guyana views its relationship with China as friendly and mutually beneficial.

Meanwhile, Minister Todd used the opportunity to express gratitude for China’s support to Guyana to help deflect the impact of the coronavirus.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations on 27 June 1972, Guyana and China have maintained a vibrant program of cooperation that is mutually beneficial and facilitated through frequent, active, and dynamic programs of cooperation, covering a diverse field of activities.
