DPI, Guyana, Thursday, August 2, 2018

“When it comes to training of human resource and building human resource capacity, the RDC is pushing very hard to ensure that happens.”

Regional Chairman of Region One, Brentnol Ashley

This was stated by Regional Chairman of Region One, Brentnol Ashely during a recent interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI).

Ashley said that the region currently has four main sectors under which it operates. These are Administration and Finance, Public Works, Education and Health Sectors. It was highlighted that more emphasis is being placed on the health and education sector.

The Regional Chairman told DPI that the council is working towards “equipping health facilities with health personnel.” He disclosed that in the latter part of this year, a programme will commence in Mabaruma which will see twenty young people being trained to become Community Health Workers. This exercise is a partnership between the Ministry of Public Health, the RDC and a donor agency who is set to provide funding.

As it relates to educational development in the region, Ashley said that they “have partnered with the Essequibo Technical Institute,” highlighting that to date, “around thirty young people…would have been attending the Essequibo Technical Institute.”

He said that the RDC’s aim “is to ensure that young people are constructively occupied and they are given an opportunity to upgrade themselves.” Ashley disclosed that for the new academic year, the number of students attending the institute will increase by sixty.

It was noted that a number of persons are on training at various institutes across the country such as Cyril Potter College of Education, the University of Guyana and various nursing schools.
