“Life does not always go the way you want it to but working hard to achieve your dreams calls for strength and motivation from within.” These were the inspirational words from Onika Vickery, a senior technician attached to the Road Safety Department within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure.

Vickery has a wealth of experience within the sector spanning nearly a decade. She initially debuted as a supervisor for road works, before branching off to work within the ministry’s communications department. Whilst here her duties entailed recording updated information on workers in the hinterland region. Later, the young woman transitioned to the procurement department, then was elevated to the post of a senior technician. In her current position, Vickery is responsible for ensuring the safety of our roadways and bridges with adequate signs and other safety features.

Reflecting on the strong support system that has carved her career, Vickery added “I give all credit to my husband […] he was really my backbone in everything. He is always by my side. I have two kids and he is always there taking care of them when I am not there.”

The senior technician noted that her academic achievements gave rise to her career. Vickery, after successful completion of the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) examinations, ventured to higher education. “I went to TI [Guyana Technical Institute] and I did the architectural course and project management to be a senior technician”, the professional recalled.

Addressing the most fulfilling part of the job, the senior technician proudly stated that it is “being able to be a part of making a difference in people’s lives although …that is my greatest accomplishment”.

Moreover, Vickery had sound advice for women who may be working in jobs that they view as non-fulfilling. “There is always time for you to make a change [your job]. TI [Guyana Technical Institute] is there. You can actually go to the evening class and get yourself qualified to be in something that makes you feel comfortable.”, the senior technician explained.

International Women’s Day 2019 is celebrated under the theme “Balance for Better”.
