Additional funding was approved, in the 98th Sitting of the National Assembly, for the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) expansion project.

Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson during the 98th Sitting of the National Assembly.

More than $280M was green-lighted to facilitate payment for consultancy service on the project due to the delays in the construction contract.

Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson assured the National Assembly that the expansion project is still on schedule to be completed by December 31.

In 2011, the PPP administration, who was in government at that time, and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) inked a US$150M contract for the CJIA expansion. Work on the runway, which began in 2013, resumed in late 2016 after the loan was restructured under the Coalition government.

Further, a sum of $86M was provided to facilitate the construction of access road to CJIA and variation works proposed for the CJIA roundabout due to larger turning radius and cost associated with removal of utilities by Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) and the Guyana Telephone Telegraph (GTT). Minister Patterson stressed that the monies will only be expended on the roadworks.
