DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, March 18, 2020
In an appeal to commuters Minister of Public Infrastructure Hon. David Patterson has called for strict adherence to the best hygiene practices.
“For anyone using the public transportation, I would like to urge you to take extra precautions,” the Public Infrastructure Minister encouraged. This, he said, is necessary to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), that has so far infected people in 164 countries.
During an appearance on NCN’s COVID-19 National Update Programme, Minister Patterson further petitioned that in wake of the spread of virus globally, minibus operators and owners ought to conduct regular sanitization exercises on their vehicles to decrease health hazards for commuters.
Onboard the state-operated ferries, the Government has conducted frequent sanitization and has issued both protective gear and hygiene products to its crew.
The Ministry of Public Health has advised citizens to observe social distances to reduce the likelihood of transmission COVID-19. This has been supported by the Department of Public Service enacting a shift system for its workers.
To date, there have been five confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Guyana.
