Confirmed COVID-19 cases now stand at 554
— New Min. of Health prepares to tackle pandemic head-on

As the new Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony and team prepare to address the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Health has reported that the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus is now 554.
This comes after 16 more persons – 10 men and 6 women- tested positive for the virus.
To date, 189 persons have recuperated from COVID-related illnesses, while 22 have succumbed. In total, 5,280 persons have been tested for the virus.
Currently, there are 343 active cases in institutional isolation at various facilities across Guyana; 38 persons in institutional quarantine and three patients housed in the COVID-19 ICU.
Globally, the World Health Organisation (WHO) is reporting that as of August 8, positive cases stand at 19,187,943 with 716,075 deaths. While in the Regions of the Americas, positive cases now stand at 10,290,44 with a total of 380,894 deaths.
Citizens are reminded to continue practising social distancing in the workplace, public spaces, and while using public transportation to reduce the spread of the coronavirus disease. They are also reminded to practise frequent hand washing/sanitising and always wear a face mask if they must go out.
