Continued COVID-19 relief for overseas scholarship students
-to assist 120 continuing students
As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to affect the Education Sector, the Government of Guyana continues to realise its mandate to provide support for those affected.
Minister of Public Service, Hon. Sonia Parag, during a virtual press conference on Monday, said in light of the pandemic, Guyanese scholarship students studying overseas are receiving additional support from the Government.
“In addition to providing them with the stipend, as the Ministry usually does, we are also providing aid in terms of food hampers,” Minister Parag said.
The Minister also stated that in some countries such as Cuba, commodities are only available for purchase using US Dollars. As such, the Ministry has set counter-measures in place.
“We are providing other measures in place, whereby they can access through their card or so on; to access from those stores via US dollars, their commodities. So, they are being taken care of and ever-so-often, we provide hampers for them to sustain them amidst the COVID,” she expanded.
There are currently 120 continuing students studying abroad in 14 countries, as of August 12, 2020, according to the Minister.
