Four programmes to guide Business Ministry’s strategic plan

GINA, Guyana, Monday, December 19, 2016

The Ministry of Business’ Strategic Plan will see the Ministry focusing on quality, inclusivity, diversity and responsibility, through four programmes. These have been divided into a number of sub-programmes.

Minister of Business with the responsibility for Tourism, Dominic Gaskin said that strategic plan’s (launched on October 27, 2016) four programmes align well with the priorities identified by the APNU+AFC Coalition in their campaign manifesto last year, as well as with the policies articulated during the time the Government has been in office.

Minister Gaskin said that programmes and the Strategic Plan are also well aligned with the theme of Budget 2017, ‘Building a diversified and green economy, delivering the good life to all Guyanese.’

“There can be no doubt that the work of our government is informed by a clear sense of direction and purpose,” Minister Gaskin said.

The Ministry’s four programmes are: Policy Development and Administration, Business Development, Support and Promotion, Competition and Consumer Protection, and promoting growth and development of the tourism sector.

Policy Development and Administration will provide strategic direction and management, and the administrative support for the work of the Ministry. The Ministry’s strategic plan will also be carried out within this programme in which the Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin will be closely involved.

Business Development, Support and Promotion will be the implementing programme through which most of the business related targets will be met. This programme comprises the activities of the Department of Industry, the Small Business Bureau, the Guyana National Bureau of Standards, and the Guyana Office for Investment and the Department of Commerce.

Competition and Consumer Protection addresses these two issues through the Department of Consumer Protection within the Ministry, and the semi-autonomous Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission.

The Department of Tourism within the Ministry is responsible for strategic direction of the growth and development of the tourism sector, while the semi-autonomous Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) will implement government’s policies regarding the development, marketing and regulation of the tourism industry.

Minister Gaskin said that the strategic plan and the programmes will help improve Guyana’s economic performance while promoting the country.
