GPF investigating persons aiding illegal crossings

The Guyana Police Force is currently looking into the matter of persons aiding in the illegal crossing of migrants and contraband into the country.

This was disclosed during a virtual stakeholder meeting with the Tourism Recovery Action Committee. The forum was held to discuss ways to slow the spread of COVID-19 which has affected the local tourism sector.

Senior Superintendent Charmaine Stuart, during her presentation, said networking with the frontier communities is key to addressing the issue of illegal crossings. This includes tourist operators, Toshaos and Community Development Officers.

Stuart also noted that immigration officers will play a key role in this effort “by ensuring that all persons entering Guyana are apprehended and processed in accordance with the necessary guidelines outlined in the laws of Guyana in fulfilling the established requirements.”

In response to a question raised, the Officer said the GPF had received information that some ranks may be aiding individuals in crossing illegally and were conducting investigations.

“We have received information and are currently working on it. Whatever information persons would have concerning illegal crossings and ranks being involved, we will pursue it,” Stuart assured.

The Superintendent noted that education and awareness sessions in the frontier communities will also play a critical role in curbing the spread of the virus.

“We need more billboards, campaigns and we can also use the Toshaos, the Community Development Officers to go into those communities and educate the residents about COVID-19 and how they can play a part,” she stated.

The frontier areas include Imbotero, Baramita and Morawhanna in Region One, Kaikan and Eteringbang in Region Seven, Orinduik in Region Eight and Lethem/Ttakatu Bridge Crossing in Region Nine.
