DPI, Guyana, Thursday, July 19, 2018

The Institute of Health Science Education (IHSE) of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) boasts of providing Doctors and Nurses with a specialised line of Post Graduate medical education.

The institute, housed in the compound of the GPHC works closely with the University of Guyana (UG) which provides medical accreditation for the various programmes offered. Basically, the IHSE is principally dedicated towards the educational functions of GPHC.

To date, 100 nurses and 70 doctors have studied at and graduated from this institute in specialised fields. Currently, 140 students are enrolled across the host of specialised health education programmes and are practicing at the GPHC.

Just recently, the top flat of a building in the GPHC compound’s East and Lamaha street entrance had been commissioned for the purpose of facilitating lectures in a modern learning environment.

Additionally, the acting Director of Medical Education at the GPHC, Dr. Alexandra Harvey said this new space made available for the IHSE caters to an expanding student population.

Dr. Harvey indicated that IHSE introduced a next-level of medical education at Guyana’s National Health Institution. She noted that IHSE has been the initiator and continues to be the leader in this country for post-graduate medical education.

“Prior to 2006, this type of training was not available in Guyana… Starting initially with one programme but we now have expanded to 14 certified programmes with more on the horizon.” Dr. Harvey explained.

Qualified nurses and doctors get the opportunity to further their medical education, obtaining diplomas and degrees in various fields such as Surgery, Anesthesia, Internal Medicine Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Radiology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics, Family Medicine and Neonatal Intensive Care.
