Intl Judges and Prosecutors to converge on Guyana for CFATF conference -Commonwealth SG to open conference with President Granger

Judges and prosecutors from the twenty-five countries will attend the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) Judges and Prosecutors Conference to be hosted in Guyana in May 2-5.

Attorney General Basil Williams, said Guyana will be represented by two Judges and the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Shalimar Ali-Hack. The judges were selected by the Chancellor of the Judiciary Yonette Cummings-Edwards.

AG Williams noted that one judge said that all of the CFATF members have confirmed attendance to the conference which will be held at the Pegasus Hotel in Georgetown.

The meeting is being hosted in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Caribbean Development Bank.

AG Williams said President David Granger and Commonwealth Secretary General, the Right Honourable Patricia Scotland, will open the conference. Following the opening, the President will host participants at State House.

Two days of the conference will be dedicated to workshop exercises and discussions on CFATF’s mutual evaluation reports, investigative orders, prosecution and management of money laundering cases, international cooperation among others.

“The outcomes intended include having a better appreciation on the part of both bench and prosecution of the nature of money laundering offences, terrorist financing and what has been added to this is countering violent extremism,” AG Williams noted.
