Most of the 43 health facilities located in Region 3 (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), will soon undergo major infrastructural works, long overdue, according to Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence.
Both the Leonora and West Demerara Hospitals will be furnished with equipment for the laboratory and gynaecologist departments, during an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI) today, at the sixth leg of the ‘Government comes to you’ outreach, held at the National Track and Field Centre in Edinburgh, West Coast of Demerara.
“We will also be doing some work to the Parika Health Centre. There, the entire floor will be redone. Also, a lot of monies will be spent in the Wakenaam Community Health Centres,” she added.
Relative to staff training, Minister Lawrence noted that her ministry has invested an enormous percentage of its finance to offset the costs of training courses for junior and senior employees; which will result in the provision of quality services to residents on the West Coast of Demerara.
“We are working in collaboration with our Regional Executive Officer (REO) to address our Human Resource Issues in the Region; so that we can have staff to work with our doctors on a 24 hours basis,” Minister Lawrence emphasised.
Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings explained that the ministry has been able to attend to issues of thousands during the government outreaches. She said several of the nation’s youth have taken the opportunity to apply for vacancies within the ministry.
“Some of the youths are qualified and some just have a sound secondary education, but that does not debar them taking up careers in Health. So, we have decided to offer them the various courses in terms of training starting from community health workers to professional nurse. Most of them were enthused to know that even though they don’t have five CXC subjects they can still be part of the health team,” Minister Cummings noted.
