DPI, Guyana, Saturday, May 26, 2018
In keeping with the spirit of Independence, residents of Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) ushered in Independence Day at the Anna Regina Car park with a Cultural programme and flag raising ceremony.
At the ceremony, Minister within the Ministry of Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson in her address reflected on the trailblazers who championed the cause for Guyana’s independence for many years.
“During this annual celebration, we recognise our past leaders who made this a memorable occasion. Let us not forget it was the late Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, Guyana’s first Executive President and Dr. Cheddi Jagan who both laboured tirelessly in helping to realise our status as an independent nation.”
Minister Ferguson also spoke of the continued strides the Government has made to ensure Guyanese benefit from continued economic and social growth. “Your Government continues to build on the foundation created. Fellow Guyanese, you will agree with me that as a region and by extension our country, we have made many strides over the past 52 years…. we still have a far way to go,”
The Minister added, “I urge you to remain steadfast, let us join together as one people, we are one nation and we all have one destiny we are working towards to build our beautiful country.”
Minster Ferguson along with members of the Joint Forces, RDC and NDC councillors and residents of Anna Regina were treated to a diverse programme featuring scores of youths reflecting Guyanese culture.
The Golden Arrowhead was hoisted moments to midnight while scores of Guyanese proudly sang the National Anthem, a symbol of our Independence.
