The Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) is currently mapping ‘visitor ready’ products across communities in Guyana, with the aim of promoting tourism at the local and international levels.

This is according to the GTA Director, Brian Mullis who was at the time speaking at the Regional Flagship Tourism Project Forum at the Regency Suites Hotel, Georgetown.

Mullis said his team has been acquiring new products which he believes will attract visitors on a weekly basis.

He said while the government has been pushing market readiness across the country, in light of the budding oil industry, it is important to offer quality products and services to those who will visit. “That is the benchmark we have to strive for, to get more products in the marketplace, and begin actively promoting those through all the various platforms that the tourism authority has.”

Minister of Business with responsibility for Tourism, Dominic Gaskin who was also at the event said while product development is a private sector responsibility, the government is prepared to play a supporting role in ensuring tourism products and services meet a certain standard.

“We do have to put in the infrastructure that will support the sustainability of the particular enterprise. The government has the responsibility to ensure that the industry is properly regulated to develop standards for the industry, support product development and market destination Guyana.”

He added, “as a government, we are prepared to invest in product development; not to replace private investors but to play a supporting role.”
