UG campus closed after another bomb threat

Afternoon exams at the University of Guyana’s (UG) Turkeyen Campus were today postponed as another bomb threat has been made against the tertiary institution. This is according to Head of Security, Hugh Gibson who spoke with the Department of Public Information (DPI) on the state of affairs at the tertiary institution.

The Security Head said security protocols are in full effect. Inspections of the many buildings on the university’s ground have begun at the administration. “It is going to be complicated, but we have to do what is necessary for safety,” the Head of Security said.

DPI solicited a comment from the Personnel Office at UG on the postponement of exams and was issued a statement which read, in part, “the VC [Vice-Chancellor] has approved the closure of campus given the rain and what is required to be done.”

The university also issued a notice on its website which affirmed that the campus was closed until further notice. It added that members of the Guyana Police Force and Fire Service were on location conducting checks in each building and surrounding areas.

Friday’s bomb scare at UG comes after similar threats were issued against the institution on February 9. That situation resulted in the arrest and prosecution of a student attached to the university.
