“We heard what is being said in the villages, rural areas and the National Assembly.”

This is the assurance His Excellency President David Granger gave to the nation’s young people at the first annual Youth Empowerment Summit (YES) on Thursday evening.

He was at the time delivering the feature address at Watooka Guest House, Linden, Upper Demerara, Upper Berbice.

President Granger reminded the youths that they are vital to the nation’s development.

“You will become the muscle and brains of this nation,” he remarked further adding “you need to be provided with the knowledge and skills needed to transform this nation.”

The Head of State remarked that young people must be prepared to take up the mantle of leadership and since assuming office, the Coalition Government has invested heavily in the education sector.

“It [education] is essential if you are going to be empowered,” President Granger said.

He noted the importance of providing forums such as the summit to have their voices heard.

The President noted that the next decade will be a transformative one especially in the area of youth empowerment and development.

Despite the inclement weather, the lawns of the Watooka Guest House were overflowing with scores of young people.

The event provided a platform for youths to express themselves and directly engage the Head of State and select members of his Cabinet.

This is the first annual Youth Empowerment Summit (YES) and Symposium, hosted by the “Youth Forward Movement.” The brains behind the summit, Region 10’s Member of Parliament, Jermaine Figueira who opined that youths who are the leading demographic must be provided with a platform where their voices could be heard.

The summit saw youths delivering powerful presentations on major issues such as health, education, sport and natural resources. Among these presentations, the talent of Guyana shined with beautiful performances in the forms of dances and song.

Also, in attendance were several other ministers of government.
