$2.6B approved for Region 1 Barima-Waini

Region One, Barima-Waini’s budget was approved, late last evening, by the Committee of Supply, in the National Assembly. Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan defended the allocation that saw $2.2B for Current Expenditure and $350M for Capital works being approved.

Under Public Infrastructure, $46M has been assigned for the building of bridges and culverts in the region, $35M will see the construction of roads in the region while land and water transport has been apportioned $8M, bringing the total to $107,000M.

In the Education sector, $118M was approved for Capital works. Minister Bulkan in response to the Opposition’s questions regarding works that will be undertaken under this programme, explained that several schools in the region will be extended.

These include, extensions of the Santa Rosa Nursery at $13.3M; Scared Heart Primary (Mabaruam) $16M; Warapoka Primary(Moruca) $18M; Port Kaituma Primary $18M and Assaskata Primary $12M. A new Nursery School will be constructed in Kamwatta village at a cost of $10.3M

Additionally, under Education Delivery, Land and Water Transport sees $5M, Furniture and Equipment – Education $9M and Furniture and Equipment – Staff Quarters $4M.

Health Services has been allocated $ 110M. Buildings received 80M which will include provision for health facilities, quarters, mortuary, sanitary block, incinerators, oxygen distribution network and payment of retention; Land and Water Transport$2M, Furniture and Equipment – Staff Quarters $3M and Furniture and Equipment – Health 1 $24M.

Under Regional Administration and Finance Buildings – Administration $12M, Furniture and Equipment – Administration $1.5M and Furniture and Equipment – Staff Quarters at $1M.

Minister Bulkan had pointed out the capital allocations for the administrative regions will see an increase of some eight percent in 2018.
