Berbice deep water port will create opportunities for residents

Regional Chairman of Region Six, David Armogan says the construction of the Berbice deep water port will create tremendous opportunities for the people of the county.

Mr. Armogan was at the time addressing residents during the celebration of New Amsterdam’s 130th anniversary as a township, on Wednesday.

The multimillion-dollar project is being undertaken by Canadian oil-and-gas exploration company, CGX Energy Inc. The wharf is being constructed on 30 acres of land on the eastern bank of the Berbice River, adjacent to Crab Island.

“That project has already started by CGX, the road is being constructed, I was there a few days ago and the infrastructure is almost 50 per cent completed… so the rice boats and many of the other small [boats] coming from the Caribbean and elsewhere will be able to bring their cargo here in New Amsterdam and take cargo from the region out into the Caribbean and other places,” the Regional Chairman said.

He said it is major development being undertaken that will benefit the people, especially through job creation.

“I know for a fact too that we have high levels of unemployment and so any business that comes to our town or any new investment that is being promoted within this area is welcomed because it creates employment for our people and puts money in the pockets of ordinary people,” he said.

Since the PPP/C administration took office in August 2020, there have been tremendous investments by foreign companies. This was due to the diligent work by the Government to return confidence in the economy, by restoring democracy.
