DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, September 26, 2018

As the calendar of events for Agriculture Month was launched today, it was highlighted that a national tree planting exercise will be observed on October 5 at Ebini, Region Ten.

This was disclosed by Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder, earlier today at the official launching of activities for the month.

Minister Holder said this year’s observance will focus on the government’s progress, challenges which were overcome, and the new path being crafted as the country pursues a green economy and transitions to sustainable economic growth.

The event will commence with an interfaith service on September 30 at the Ministry of Agriculture’s compound.

“Among the main events earmarked for the Agri-month will be our national tree day observance at Ebini in Demerara Upper Berbice which will be held under the theme “Trees good for the community: great for the country,”; October 16 will be our annual FAO sponsored World Food Day observance to be held at Lake Mainstay, Wyaka, in Region Two. Emphasis this year will also be placed on the use of alternative sources as the ministry continue to look at ways at which we can reduce the cost of production in agriculture,” Minister Holder stated.

Additionally, the Minister said the intention is to have the month of activities raise awareness among citizens, especially children, about the various processes involved in agricultural production and supply.

“During agriculture month we try to bring aspects to the fore to let you know what has been happening, that allows you to live the life you are living; eating as you do; that allows the economy to work as it does, for example, through the export of US $200M USD worth of rice. Things of that nature. It’s to let you know this is what’s happening,” Minister Holder explained.

Among the other activities on the calendar of events is an Agricultural conference at NAREI on October 22. The Ministry’s annual inter-departments cook-off competition on October 24; the commissioning of two farine factories at Woweta and Moco Moco in Upper Takatu-Upper Essequibo on Oct 26 and 27 respectively. There will also be the Secondary Schools pesticides awareness competition, the finals will be held on October 25 at the National Cultural Centre.
