—Regions 5, 6 and 10 benefit
DPI, Guyana, Saturday, May 2, 2020
The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) on Saturday continued its distribution exercise of relief hampers to persons living with disabilities in Region Five, Six and Ten
The Guyana Association for the Blind-Berbice Chapter, the Disabled Peoples Network in Regions 5 and 6 along with the New Amsterdam Special Needs School were the recipients of 153 hampers.
Speaking to DPI, the Principal of the New Amsterdam Special Needs School, Zoya Crandon noted that the initiative to assist the most vulnerable groups is a notable one and will provide her members with much-needed supplies.
“These individuals usually have a tough time either getting around or accessing supplies under normal circumstances and now with the curfew and restrictions in place, it is even harder. These hampers will go a long way to help.”
Dawn Benjamin, who represented the Disabled Peoples Network in Region 6 and the Guyana Association for the Blind, Berbice Chapter; received 47 of the hampers which will be distributed to the members.
Meanwhile, in Region 10, a total of 97 hampers was distributed to the Wismar Resource Centre for the Blind, the Wismar Baptist Deaf Association Group and the Lindeners Supporting Efforts for People with Disabilities (LINSEED).
The presentation was done by Second Lieutenant Alexis William.
June Julian a representative of the Wismar Baptist Deaf Association and Chairman of LINSEED, Colin Ault both thanked the CDC for the timely donation.
Ault explained that his group had made efforts to assist members, but more was needed to meet the needs of all the members, therefore “this gesture by the CDC and others responsible is very timely,” Ault remarked.
Shellon Swaving, a teacher at the Wismar Resource Centre for the Blind said the 49 hampers her organisation received will be donated to the families of the current and past students of the school.
The organisations have already started the distribution exercise to their respective members and the CDC will continue to monitor the situation, to ascertain how best to meet the needs of vulnerable groups at this time.
