Developments underway in Region One – Min. Indar

Minister within the Ministry of Public Works Hon. Deodat Indar says the Government remains committed to the development of the Barima-Waini (Region One). 

The Minister, who was speaking at a meeting on Sunday, said investments will continue in every sector, with special focus on the infrastructure, energy and transport sectors.

Minister Indar accompanied Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Robeson Benn, Minister of Housing and Water, Hon. Collin Croal and Minister of Natural Resources, Hon. Vickram Bharrat on an outreach to the region at the weekend.

“I just want you to know that a lot of emphasis is placed on Region one, with regards to infrastructure, with regards to your transport system and the energy that you receive” Minister Indar told residents of Mabaruma.

During the meeting, he highlighted the development works ongoing in the community.  

He noted a $1 million contract which was approved for the extension of the main road. The Minister explained that the project was put on hold due to some issues, but will continue within the next week.

Another $127 million will go towards the construction of a concrete road from Mabaruma to Hosororo Hill. The Minister said the high-quality thoroughfare may require more money to be completed.

He said payments have already been made to India for the ferry for the North-West district. The vessel is expected to be completed in 18 months.

Minister Indar said energy issues in the community were addressed and new engines were bought. In addition, engineers were employed to ensure the proper maintenance of the engines.

Other developmental works are also ongoing on the Mabaruma stelling and other communities across the region, the Minister said.
